2 Things That Can Be Learned From Your IP Address

You might have heard of an IP address, such as if you were informed that your IP address was being noted while posting a comment on a busy website or blog or while posting on a forum, but you might not have put a lot of thought into such matters. However, you should know that someone who knows a little something about IP addresses can actually figure a lot of things out about you from your IP address, particularly if he or she is willing to spend a little bit of time and do a little bit of research. These are a couple of things that can be figured out from your IP address.

1. Where You Live

Contrary to what some people believe, your IP address generally cannot be used to track down your exact physical location. However, your IP address can be used to determine the roundabout area of where you live or otherwise use the Internet. For example, even though someone who tracks your IP address may not be able to figure out exactly which street you live on or which house you live in, he or she may be able to use your IP address to determine the name of your town. In some cases, the information can be a little more exact than that, such as the side of town that you live on.

2. What Websites You Have Been Accessing

Another thing that can be figured out from your IP address is which websites you have been visiting. You might be surprised by the many websites that track IP addresses. This generally is not done for nefarious reasons; instead, some websites use this information to get a general idea of its audience, such as the general area where many of its readers are from. Some websites, particularly those that are prone to online attacks for one reason or another, track this information so that they will have at least some recourse in the event that their website is abused or attacked in any way.

As you can see, there are a few things that can be figured out from your IP address. If you do not like the idea of all of this information being available to tech-savvy individuals, however, you do have some recourse. For example, you can buy a private IP address yourself and can make adjustments to it so that your information can not be easily tracked. For your personal safety and privacy, this may be something that you will want to look into.
